OU’s games now broadcasted locally on KOFO
KOFO is taking over radio broadcast of all OU athletic events this semester.
Last year, sports were only broadcast online through Stretch Internet. Sports will be broadcast on 1220 A.M. KOFO and online.
Bob Johnson, an employee of KOFO radio will be doing the broadcasts as well as guiding a few OU students who would like to work in radio in the future.
"I think we'll have a little bit of something for everyone," Johnson said.
The pre-game show will now be 45 minutes long prior to kickoff. During the pre-game show, there will be interviews with Head Football Coach Kent Kessinger and Defensive Coordinator Josh Homolka. They will also take a look at the game that will be played that day.
There are three OU students who will be assisting with the sports broadcasts this year, Andy Otto, Jeff Savage and Casey Wieder. They will have different responsibilities with the show while Johnson does the play-by-play.
Otto, who used to play for the Braves, will be helping out with color commentary during the football games. Color commentary is basically adding more information to make the play-by-play more interesting. Since Otto used to play for the Braves, he knows some of the offensive plays.
"I'm hoping it's going to bring a new expertise to the broadcast," Johnson said.
Savage will be helping out with color commentary as well as some sideline reporting at football games. He will also be assisting with pre-game, halftime and post-game productions.
"There's a lot more dedication to it and being able to use KOFO will bring a more professional atmosphere to it," he said. "I think we'll be able to put out some high quality broadcasts."
Savage is looking forward to the passion and excitement that is generated by each game.
"I really like working with Bob and this does a great job of incorporating the student role into OU broadcasting," he said.
Wieder, who has been working with Johnson since his freshman year, will be helping broadcast men's and women's basketball. He will be doing both play-by-play and color commentary with Johnson.
"I think it's always important to broadcast football and basketball and it covers a wide variety of audiences. We can do internet and radio. It's a big deal, which is cool," he said. "Bob Johnson's always good to work with."
Wieder will also be doing "Game of the Week" for high school football in Franklin County with Johnson every Friday.
"Casey is an awesome kid," Johnson said. "I love working with him."
All four are looking forward to a great year in OU sports.
"It gives them something to practice on and work on if this is something they want to do," Johnson said of Otto,
Savage and Wieder. "It's good practice for them. I'm just looking forward to calling a game."
