Dancing, singing shows still successful

With generation x sat squarely in front of the TV, ‘reality' is still being brought to them through industry tycoons of NBC, MTV, FOX, CBS and ABC.

As more and more of these shows pop up, the fewer ideas corporations have for new hip shows.

The solution? Dancing and singing shows. America can't get enough of them. According to fox17.com, "Dancing with the Stars" still pulls in about 17 million viewers in its ninth season.

Chelsey Weaver, senior, Scranton, and Jessica Ausmus, junior, King City, Mo. sit down weekly to watch their favorite reality show competitions including America's Got Talent, the Biggest Loser and American Idol.

"There isn't always a lot on TV, and if you're interested in music, then the singing or dancing shows will appeal to you most," Ausmus said. "We don't call in and vote or anything, it's just something we like to watch."

Though Weaver agrees that the lack of series on television influences her reality TV watching, she enjoys seeing the talent sometimes.

"There's something you can't fake about being good," Weaver said. "Everyone wants to see raw talent on the television."

As for the less talented on tv, both agree it could be a hoax but don't mind.

"It's really there for our entertainment," Ausmus said. "If they want to stage something to make me laugh, I don't care if it's really reality or not."

Networks even outside the musical realm have tried to pick up on the arts craze. Spike-TV, the ‘man's channel' staged their first music reality show "On the road" only to have it end in a flop.

Erin Michael, senior, Drexel, Mo. believes that it's a network need to please all their viewers.

"It makes sense that every company is trying out the music craze," Michael said. "You can see it on any channel like Disney or USA. There's even series that incorporate music."

Michael thinks the need to incorporate music has also influenced music TV.

"There isn't even musical reality shows on MTV anymore," Michael said. "It's like everyone has to go outide their zone."
