Creative literary journal in the works

The OU literary journal is returning with a new name. Inkblots and Brushstrokes will be released at the beginning of next semester, and they are currently accepting submissions up to April 26, said Adawe Lifeplan Center adviser Sarah Ngoh. Ngoh, who is also adviser to Cognoscenti, said that the English department had put out a literary journal in the past. "When I was a student here it was called ‘The Mighty Pen,'" she said. "So when we restarted Cognoscenti this semester, we wanted to publish a literary journal again that celebrated the talents of our students, faculty and staff here at Ottawa." Ngoh said that one of her roles would be as an editor for Cognoscenti, and that she is the one who is receiving submissions. "We are looking for poems, short stories, excerpts from novels, research articles, paintings, drawings, photographs, anything artistic we want it," she said. Dorvonda Payne, Junior communication and english majors is the vice president of Cognoscenti and said that she will be one of the editors as well. Payne also said that one of the things that she hoped students will get out of submitting to the literary journal is the recognition of their work. "It's always nice to see that someone appreciated some work that you did and just to have something that you did bound and printed," she said. Cristina Uribe, a freshman, is the secretary of Cognoscenti and also one of the editors. "I'm not really like a writer or a poet but I love to listen to poetry and I love reading," she said. "It gives me a chance to be around people who do write and do poetry and they can share their writing with me." Payne and Ngoh both said that any kinds of submissions would be considered, from traditional writing to photographs of sculptures. "There's no limits on what is art if you feel that you have something you want to share," Payne said. Submissions should be sent to Sarah Ngoh at sarah.ngoh@ottawa.edu.
