Brown Hall celebrates chicken month

September is national chicken month.

Instead of releasing live chickens onto campus to terrorize the students, faculty and staff for generations to come, Brown Hall RA Whitney Bowen did the next best thing. She organized an event where people could cook their favorite chicken dishes, and then serve them.

This was all planned to go down on Friday night.

Unfortunately, the stove in Brown Hall caught on fire during cooking. The entire population of Brown Hall had to sit outside in the grass for like 45 minutes. Not a great way to start off the event.

The planned shifted from "cook in Brown Hall" to "Cook wherever things can be heated for sufficient time periods" which included portable burners placed outside of Brown Hall and some cooking in the Bennett Hall kitchen. The cooking in the kitchen continued well after my involvement with the event ended.

I was full. That chicken was real good.

At about 9 p.m., most of the chicken was done. It was served at the tables in front of Brown Hall, where most of it had been cooked. There was the classic fried chicken and equally classic hot wings. The fried chicken were pretty good, if slightly lacking in flavor. I didn't get any of the hot wings, something I will regret to my dying day.

Other dishes were the chicken alfredo with noodles, which was awesome.

There was also some really good chicken that Michael Matos, one of the other Brown Hall RAs made. When I asked him what was in it he said he would have to kill me if I knew. I'm pretty sure he was joking but I decided not to press my luck.

Whitney Bowen made some cola chicken, which was apparently marinated cola and ketchup. This definitely had an interesting flavor.

I really enjoyed eating the chicken, and despite the mess with the cooking and fire. It was cool having it outside and it was a really unique event I haven't seen before. I think we need more events like this.
