Weather Can’t Stop Ultimate Frisbee Players

On Wednesday nights, something may be glowing in the distance on campus. Welcome to the game of ultimate Frisbee.?

A weekly event for students, ultimate Frisbee has been a part of many students weekly routine. But what are the rules to this intramural sport?

Two teams do a kick off where one team throws the frisbee down the field to start playing.

That team tries to get the Frisbee across the field to their side. A player cannot run once they catch the Frisbee, and the first team to 10 points wins.

"It's fun and challening," Eric Zuelke, senior religion major, said. "It gives you a break from homework, and the turf burns are pretty cool too. It's also challenging in the different elements, too."

Rain, shine or snow, ultimate frisbee is still on. The dark doesn't matter for the players either; the glow of the Frisbee guides the way.?

"You'd be surprised how many people just like to come out and get muddy," Zuelke said.

"People are really dedicated."

He also added that while the Frisbee helps with lighting, sometimes a person could get their team confused in the dark. Even those who just go to watch agree that it's quite challenging when all the outside elements are thrown in.

"They get pretty competitive, but they're there to have fun," Erin Denning, junior education major said. "I'm there to support everyone else, it's more of a social event for me."

First-year students are also taking advantage of this intramural sport, and some of the rules may seem familiar.

"It was really hard to see in the dark," Randi Marolf, first-year, Ottawa, said. "It was easy to get the hang of things thought because I use to play ultimate football. It's similar to this, only a football is used instead of a frisbee."?

Once a team reaches 10 points, everyone must kneel on the ground. The last two people to kneel are new team captains. The next game begins from there.

On a typical Wednesday, 4 to 30 players can be seen playing on the field. The only downside, Zuelke said, is the imbalance in gender.

"We'd like for our girl player population to grow," he said.
