The Wright Stuff: Players, coach feel Heat in Miami
Will Smith once had a song where he said "party in the city where the heat is on, all night on the beach till the break of dawn."
If anyone remembers that was the single "Miami" off of one his first solo album, "Big Willie Style."
The whole point in bringing that up is to say even though that song came out in 1998, there should be no better time than 2010 to have that song blaring from any speaker you have.
The Miami Heat should be dominating the NBA, but they've been playing more like they're getting rained on every night.
So far in this young season, Miami is an average 9-8. They are in fifth place in their conference and have the 13th best record in the league. Not exactly what anyone expected. If they wanted to have this type of success, it would have come cheaper with maintaining last year's squad.
Nonetheless, here we are, witnessing the quiet embarrassment of one "King" James.
But what is the real problem in this situation? Fans andplayers alike were (and still are) expecting Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Lebron James to turn the Heat into the most formidable team in the NBA, when instead they remain formidably average.
What's the problem with these guys though? You see the names. That's 16 All-Star appearances between the three of them.
I could think of two possible problems the team could be facing.
Bringing in their own version of the Big Three, the front office might not have stopped to think how these three superstars would jell together.
The Heat and Celtics Big Threes are pretty different. For the Celtics, Ray Allen specializes mostly in threes and jump shots, while Paul Pierce can do it all, including penetrating the lane and drawing attention, while Kevin Garnett is a fiery leader who can shoot, but gets the job done on the defensive end.
For the Heat, Lebron James is an all-around beast, Dwyane Wade does many of the same things and Chris Bosh is used to being the main man as well. That sounds great, but the problem is they are all used to doing the same things, and haven't really found roles for themselves yet.
I think once they do that, things will get better for them. The second thing I think is wrong is that it cost so much
to bring those guys in; there may not be the right amount of help for the team to succeed like it wants. I don't care what five you put on the court, three superstars cannot beat five regular NBA players each night.
That's a recipe for an average team.
I don't think Carlos Arroyo is the answer at the point. He is quick, but cannot shoot.
He hesitates too often to be a consistent threat. It makes me wonder what happened with the team that Mario Chalmers started his entire rookie season, but has since seen his playing time dwindle more each season.
I wouldn't blame the coach either. While I don't know how good of a coach Eric Spoelstra is, he has been pretty successful in his first couple of seasons as a coach.
Unless they are getting the Dallas Cowboy affect, where the players don't play hard in order to get their coach fired, that is not the problem.
It's definitely easy to get down on Miami 17 games in, but that shouldn't be the case until a couple of years from now.
That should be the case because these guys have a lot of time together, and don't have to put everything together, even though they would like to.
This level of talent on one team has not been seen before, and there's no telling what could come from this once they learn how to play with each other. Maybe a championship isn't in the cards yet, but it will be.
