JV Builds Skill

Every athlete wants to make the varsity team, but that impossible in college.

Junior varsity sports give new student athletes a better feel of what it is like to play at a college level.

Junior varsity teams especially help freshmen gain the experience and skills they will need to make varsity.

"It gives me a chance to play and game time experience," Quinton Flaming, football said.

Some students think that JV is just a second string for varsity, just in case one of the players gets hurt, they will be able to play but that is not the case.

"I don't want to play in any varsity games this year, because I don't want any of the players to get hurt, they're all so good," Flaming said.

JV sports also gives student athletes time to bond as a team and see what it is like to at a college level.

"It's different playing at a college level, because it's quicker, defense it better and it's harder to prepare," Lauren Buckles, basketball and track said.

JV athletes are getting a better understanding of what sports really are.

The practices are harder, the trips are longer and their schedules are full.

Most student athletes like JV, because it's something they can do for the exercise and excitement of playing with a team.

Not all athletes have scholarships for the sport they play. Some students just play for the fun of it.

JV sports also make students want to work harder.

"It makes me want to study more, so I can get good grades and be eligible to play," Katy Shawver, softball said. "It also helps me mentally, it makes me focus more."
