FCA provides fun activities through religion
To senior Brayonda Powell, the Fellowship of Christians Athletes means "hope."
Powell, who has been a member of FCA for four years and is a leader this year, said FCA is a great way to develop one's faith and gain friendships. She said FCA, along with other campus ministries has helped her deepen her relationship with God as well as being fun.
Jeffrey Savage, one of the other leaders of FCA, said he enjoys the fact that the club is built around sporting events and athletics.
"Sports are used as the avenue to draw in athletes, and through that Jesus shows His glory and plan for us," he said.
Savage also said that sports are used as a platform to reach a lost world for Christ.
He said FCA is especially beneficial to athletes because they can spend time together looking at what it means to be a Christ-follower and how one can fit sports into faith.
When asked to describe FCA, Powell said that the group is exactly what its name says.
"It is an opportunity for students on campus to fellowship and grow in their relationship with God," she said
Huddle leader Wendell Smith said non-athletes can be involved in FCA.
"The mission of FCA is to present to athletes and coaches, and all whom they influence, the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving Him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the church," he said.
Smith has been the Fellowship of Christian Athletes huddle leader for the past five years. He said FCA is one of many campus ministry opportunities for students to explore while they are at OU. He strongly believes in all Christian students finding fellowship with other believers and seeking positive answers to all of the questions one faces in life, he said.
"Our world is full of negative influences and challenges that take our focus away from our Creator, and can lead us down the wrong path," he said.
Every Tuesday evening at 9 p.m., the club meets for a time of worship, typically involving a bible study, free food and games.
Powell says to expect a lot of guest speakers at this year's meetings.
She said there is usually one big event during the year. Last year Marty Magehee, former member of Christian music group 4Him, performed in the Ottawa chapel for students. Whereas the specific details of this year's events have not yet been planned, Powell said it is always a fun time.
Smith said that there will be a greater focus on community service events this year.
