Wright: Infomercials are making us lazy, foolish

America is changing, and in some ways, in a much lazier direction.

Have you ever seen the beginning of a commercial with a black and white screen, and an actor portraying something that people do every day, but in an amazingly frustrating fashion?

Chances are if you watch TV, you have. Infomercials, infomercials, infomercial… Those are the most annoying and comical portrayals of American life, and the people who make these things should never do a commercial again. Ever.

One afternoon in between classes I saw the newest Snuggie commercial. They were dancing around doing the Macarena, amongst other lame things, and I angrily laughed at how corny it was. The sad thing is, I got my mom a Snuggie as a joke last Christmas,

and ended up wearing it more than anyone in the house.

Some of these products are terrible, some aren't, but the problem is how badly some advertisements try to convince us that their product will make life so much easier. It's not that hard to make a phone call when you're lying under a blanket, come on now.

The HD Sunglasses was also another product that couldn't cut it. The commercials made regular vision look terribly bleak and dry, but as soon as the glasses were put on, everything was perfectly clear. Sounds pretty weak, but I heard they actually help a little.

The Tiddy Bear was a doomed idea from the start. First of all the name leads the imagination to think what it wants, and then the commercial starts.

A woman is sitting in her car seat, struggling to put on her seat belt, and the announcer says something about how seat belts irritate people so much that their driving ability is affected.

Then the woman has a Tiddy bear, a small teddy bear that goes over the seat belt strap and magically gets rid of any discomfort. The Tiddy Bear is often shown worn in the women's chest area, which was ironically inappropriate.

The fact that these people had the nerve to sell this thing for $15 was the last straw.

These products and advertisements are wonders to me, but there is a bigger issue that a lot of people need to hear. We are progressing into an increasingly lazier society.

People are becoming more one-sided in what they do with their lives. I know that sounds a lot deeper than it may seem, but maybe it really is that big of a deal.

If you think about it, kids are told to focus more on one sport instead of being diverse. Why can't they just work harder and play as many sports as possible?

We hear our parents complain about how our younger siblings stay in the house and play video games all day, when even our generation played outside with our friends more when we were younger.

Granted, things progressively changed as more things came out and we got older, but there was a time when you needed to get out of the house and play.

Those are just little things that are often overlooked. Americans need to be more well-rounded.

Don't be sucked into the easy life. Just because you can sit down in a chair and do an ab workout for $20 doesn't mean you can save that money and do a few more crunches.

And please stop with the weight-loss pills. Go to the gym work it off. Quit spending money, it's a recession.
