Most Obama critics not racist

By Joel Wright

We are always reminded of race.

When Barack Obama was elected president of the United States, he had to know moments like these were inevitable. Recently, former President Jimmy Carter cited race as a reason Obama is criticized so hard.

"When a radical fringe element of demonstrators and others begin to attack the president of the United States as an animal or as a reincarnation of Adolf Hitler or when they wave signs in the air that said we should have buried Obama with Kennedy, those kinds of things are beyond the bounds."

Carter went on to talk more about his belief that a lot of critics' sour attitudes are directed toward Obama because his skin color happens to be different. I think that is a ludicrous statement because most critics are not racist, I would assume. There is no way any president, black or white, could be elected if there was animosity toward him before the election.

The Obama administration was quick to deny the race possibility, for obvious reasons. If he were to ever use race in any negative way, it doesn't take an expert to realize that would be hitting the "self destruct" button.

Every president has his critics, but it seems like every move that Obama has made has been under mass scrutiny. I don't think I have ever seen someone put under fire for triumphantly killing a fly, but that's no big deal right?

The issues are what need to be looked at, and if the problem is that the country is not improving, that is the reason the president is doing bad. Taking a look at Obama's legacy so far, the first 10 months of his presidential term have been up and down.

From the high-priced stimulus package to the ongoing health care debate, the 44th presidency has been rolling up a steep hill to please the American people.

Many are not pleased, thus leading to a high amount of criticism raining down on Barack Obama.

I think that he is truly doing his best, and we need to give the process time to grow into something effective in the next three years. Of all the people giving him a hard time, I have not heard many coming up with better options.

One thing I don't want to see is the president's face on ESPN talking about March Madness or bringing the Olympics to Chicago.

He has bigger problems to face and should use all of his time to focus on changing the economic landscape of this country. Leave the sports issues to those whose job it is to work with sports.

As an American, I knew this would be much different than any other presidency. I hope that nothing comes down to race issues with our current president, for the sake of our country.

We have come a long way in 30 years, but racism is still a very real thing.

It baffles me how the difference of a skin tone can cause a human being to actually hate another, but the world will keep changing, and hopefully we will be better to each other.
