Wait, That's Actually True?
The phrases “that is an alternative fact” or “fake news” have become very prevalent in today’s society. For me, most of my news comes from social media.
Knowing that I have to take information with a grain of salt, some of the news I know is fake but is still interesting.
Who wouldn’t click on the story about the man who makes $400 a week just by sitting at home and doing surveys? Then there are times when my curiosity is piqued to see how crazy these “fake” stories are that ended up being real, which is my inspiration for this article.
These are the top 5 Facebook stories I thought were fake but turned out to be true:
1. A politician actually proposed a bill for stripper body regulation.
Yes, you read that title correctly, Rep. Ken Havard (R-Louisiana) proposed an amendment he later referred to as “satire” that would regulate the age and weight of strippers. Strippers would have an age limit of 28 and a weight of 160 pounds. When asked why he chose these certain standards, he replied, “I’m worried about their health and wouldn’t want them to hurt one another.” After quickly being grilled by a female state representative, he quickly withdrew his amendment. Yes, there is a video of this entire incident.
2. Girl scout cookies sold outside of pot shop
This story takes place in San Diego, where a 9-year-old girl sold out her inventory of girl scout cookies (312 boxes) outside a dispensary in a mere five hours. Some people were up in arms about the whole situation, but if you ask me this is smart business. Even the dispensary let clients know that a young business mogul was selling cookies and that she would be returning the next day during business hours.
3.The Negro Motorist Green-Book
This one caught me off guard when I initially saw the video of it. I was certain this was going to be some really good fake news. When the discussion of segregation comes up, I guessed I miss this part. The Negro Motorist Green-Book was a guide for blacks (negroes) created in 1936 by a postal worker in Harlem. The guide helped blacks travel across the country safely -- which restaurants, barbers, gas stations, etc., served blacks. This was during the Jim Crow era where it wasn’t necessarily safe for blacks to travel in certain locations in the country.
4. Bacteria eating pure electricity
When I first saw this video, I thought it was a lost episode of the magic school bus. Bacteria that only eat electricity? Sounds like a plot line for a sci-fi film. Just like the rest of this article, they’re actually real. These bacteria eat and release electricity, but don’t worry they do no harm humans. They can’t be harvested to give you electrical powers like static shock (it’s okay, I had the same thought as well). These bacteria can create bio machines that help clean up sewage and contaminated water, too.
5.Burritos stuffed with taquitos
I know you may think this is a joke and it kind of is, but on a serious note for a food lover like myself who enjoys both burritos and taquitos, seeing this article made me hungry. I thought it was going to be some weird invention someone made in their kitchen at home and shared it to the Facebook world. I was completely wrong second guessing the lovely Jimboy’s Taco located in Anaheim, Calif., where you can actually purchase this wonderful creation off their secret menu.
