5 Things to Know Before Seeing 'Deadpool'
In its opening weekend, “Deadpool,” the newest superhero movie from Fox Studios, destroyed record after record along with being praised by the character’s fans and critics alike. There’s no denying that superhero films have become a genre of their own by drawing in lifelong admirers and the casual moviegoer alike. Some, however, may be shocked if they are not prepared.
So, here are 5 things the casual fan should know before watching “Deadpool”:
1.This is not a mistake, this is Deadpool
The opening scene alone is enough to startle someone not prepared, especially if the next few things are not followed. Deadpool’s comics, if their rating system was like that of movies, would be a hard “R.” Deadpool is known for slaughtering his enemies, cracking wildly inappropriate jokes and indulging in crazy sexual escapades. The movie executes this perfectly, which would be shocking to someone not prepared.
2.Don’t take your kids
Look, this should be obvious after the first point, but the three times I went to the theater, people were excitedly dragging along their excited children. When I left the theater, those same kids had that “thousand mile stare” I had when leaving “Watchmen” for the first time. Please, just wait to send your kids to “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” They can wait a month for another hero.
3.What is a “fourth wall break?”
A fourth wall break is when a character acknowledges the audience viewing the movie or whatever medium the character is in. Deadpool is notorious for this in his comics, cartoons and video games. He is fully aware of his place in the comic book world, though he may get mad at the writers for putting him in certain situations.
4.“Hasn’t Ryan Reynolds done this already?”
Unfortunately, yes. Deadpool, or a horrible version of Deadpool, was a character in 2009’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” also played by Ryan Reynolds. The movie butchered the character, but luckily, Deadpool has a healing factor that got him back on the silver screen in the right way. This new movie was achieved through a soft reboot of the X-Men series with time travel erasing a lot of the past (horrible movies) with “X-Men: Days of Future Past” in 2014.
5. You are about to see a great movie
The final thing you need to know is that you are in for a treat. “Deadpool” surpassed expectations with a very small budget. The CGI does not live up to that of “The Avengers” or “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” but that is to be expected with a low budget. Reynolds nails the comic book character of Deadpool, but the villain, evil scientist Ajax (Ed Skrein), is rather stereotypical -- which actually works to the movie’s comedic benefit. “Deadpool” is totally worth a trip to the theater, so enjoy it.
