Confinement on Campus
I am not unreasonable. The University supports itself by collecting money from students just as all of the others do. Accommodations like dorms, meal plans and technology are rightfully charged to students who attend this beautiful campus. It is also understandable that there are prices associated with these features.
What I cannot understand, however, is how in the world the university is allowed to keep us within these pristine holdings until we have become “of age” to survive without them. Of course this is about the off-campus housing policy that Ottawa University has implemented ever since I have attended this school.
Unlike most universities in Kansas, Ottawa implements an age requirement of twenty-one years for living off campus. The assumed rationale behind this outdated rule is that only allowing those individuals meeting the legal age of drinking alcohol will dissuade any younger people to drink as the dorms do not permit alcohol.
The fact of the matter is that this age requirement does not measure responsibility or maturity. These qualities should hold much more weight than simply the years of life we have accumulated.
The unfair off campus housing policy is something that could deter future students from wanted to attend this fantastic university. It is about time that this policy is thrown out in favor of a more reasonable one.
