Why is Kim Kardashian famous?
So many people become instantly obsessed with celebrities that don’t seem to do anything to achieve their status. The question that comes up so often is why? Why are these people so incredibly famous for seemingly nothing?
One of the most obvious examples is Kim Kardashian. Ask anyone, and they could probably tell you who Kim Kardashian is, but many probably couldn’t tell you what she actually does.
Well, in case you didn’t know, Kim initially got her name in the light because of her parents. Her dad was O.J. Simpson’s attorney during his high-profile trial, and her step-dad was an Olympic athlete. The Kardashian’s reality show came out of an audition tape Kim and her friend made for MTV’s The Real World.
Let’s not forget to mention the scandalous video made with ex-boyfriend, Ray J back in 2007. This video may or may not have been Kim’s original claim, but Ray J sure likes to take the credit for it. Whether Ray J is to thank or not, Kim took advantage of whatever opportunity she had to make her name known.
Kim Kardashian isn’t the only one with seemingly unreasonable fame. Do we all remember the Alex from Target phase?
This guy became instantly famous overnight simply because some teenage girl took a picture of Alex, an attractive kid that was checking out her items at Target. In less than twenty-four hours, Alex gained 300,000 followers and a day later appeared on CNN.
The interesting part is that many of our Ottawa students don’t understand these “fad celebrities” either.
When asked about their opinions on the Kardashians and Alex from Target, seniors Aaron Vaughn and Lindsay Dahl were not afraid to tell their true feelings. “I think Kim Kardashian is overrated and I really don’t get the big deal,” Vaughn said.
“I don’t get why the Kardashians are big deal. Their mom looks like a Siamese cat. They all seem to be glorified for no reason,” Dahl said.
If people aren’t falling for the fame, then how do we explain the crazy success of her mobile game Kim Kardashian: Hollywood? According to Glu Mobile’s 2014 Quarter 3 Earnings Call, as of November, 2014, the game had been installed 22,857,239 times, and had been played a total of 5.7 billion minutes.
The game consists of creating your own celebrity and choosing outfits that will gain you fans, attending photo shoots, going on dates, buying private airplanes, cars, and houses, and ultimately becoming Kim Kardashian’s best friend and reaching the A list.
Junior Maddy Bellew said “I like the game because it reminds me of playing paper dolls as a kid and because I like being an A-lister.” She said that her love for the game has nothing to do with Kim Kardashian, herself.
While no one is sure of how much sense it makes for people like this to be considered celebrities, it does not appear that their fame is going anywhere anytime soon.
