Hidden Gems of Ottawa
With my time here in Ottawa, I’ve found a few places that feel somewhat hidden or not much known about to the general population. I’m going to share a few places that could be your next go-to spot when wanting to try something new.
#1 - The 2nd Street Dam
This is my favorite place to go to when I need a break from everything. It’s a dam on the outskirts of town with a fantastic view of the Marais Des Cygnes river. It’s a great view of nature that brings peace to the mind. I found this spot exploring with my roommate my freshman year and haven’t stopped going since. It’s cool to see how the river changes at different times of the year. Going down onto the rocks when the river is low is a cool experience as well as seeing it rage after heavy rainfall. To get there, check out the link below.

#2 - Old 56 Family Restaurant
If you haven’t been to Old 56 yet, you’re missing out on some great breakfast food. It has that little hometown feel and great food that with a fair price, especially given the amount of food you get. I’ve always had great service, great food and a good time with the friends I’ve taken there over the years. It’s right across the street from McDonald’s or check it out in the link below.

#3 - Mug Shot Coffee
If you’re looking for a place to study while wanting a nice coffee and muffin, I’d give Mug Shot a try. It has that classic coffee shop feel and is a quiet enough environment where you can do work when needed. This one is kind of hidden, since the entrance is in an alley, but if you go down Walnut Street between First and Second, you’ll find Mug Shot hidden behind the new Legacy Square parking lot.

These are just a few hidden gems in my mind that some people might not know about in Ottawa. So give these places a try when you’re looking for something new to do and have some time on your hands.
