Open Mic Night
Open mic night marks the return of student-run radio programming.
An open mic night/variety show at 8 p.m. on Nov. 1 kicks off the return of the radio program to Ottawa University. The open mic will take place in the conference room above the library where students can showcase their talents, enjoy some desserts and enter into a raffle.
Sophomore Emma Hickey, an organizer of the event, says, “We hope to give students a fun night to share their talents. We will also share information about The Campus and the radio (station) because most of the students don’t even know we have a radio station here. I hope this event will draw awareness about the opportunities our media has to offer here at Ottawa.”
In a statement to The Campus, professor Ryan Louis, head of the communication department at Ottawa University, says, “The content will be entirely student-driven. It will serve to fulfill three goals: what students need to build their portfolios, to expand their interests and to serve the larger community.”
Students interested in the field of communications should sign up for COM 10661-Radio. Other classes such as COM 2000-Media and, yours truly, COM 20361-Newspaper are also involved in hosting the event.
Louis says, “Students will be able to host their own radio programs, learn how to record music and develop/record podcasts. Further, the video portion of the studio will allow students to learn video broadcasting, green screen effects and lighting.”
Louis anticipates the content from the radio station being available through links on The Campus, SoundCloud and YouTube.
