How to Know if You're Too Close with your Roommate
The scary thing about college is: You do not always get to pick the person you live with. Even when the opportunity presents itself, the outcome is the exact opposite of what you foresaw for the friendship, but every once-in-a-while you move in with a friend who turns out to be your long-lost sibling.
1. You agree to live with each other
You constantly hear that living with your best friend will terminate the friendship that was carefully crafted over time and but think, “It will never happen to us.”
2. You are cautious at first
It is obvious you are both awesome individuals, and together you make one badass force that most will not reckon with. But, there is still the chance of actually killing one another when someone gets lippy.
3. A month in, you can now be free with each other
You have accepted the fact that when you walk down the hallway and turn the corner into the living room, your roommate will more than likely be in their underwear on the couch eating cheese.
4. And it’s fine
Because you are probably going to be jumping into the shower with the door open, singing as loudly as possible as soon as you put your book bag down. Or you make them come to the bathroom so they can sing along.
5. Going anywhere alone would be weird
By this time in the relationship you just assume you will have to venture with them anywhere they go. Oh, they are going to an important meeting with a professor? Looks like you are, too.
6. Your family becomes their family
The parents came to watch you play your sport and took you out to eat afterward. Of course your roommate will be there. When they leave, the roommate says “I love you, too” and it is not even weird.
7. Sharing is caring
What’s that? Is that a taco on their plate?! Jokes on them: Half of it will end up in your stomach.
8. Why are you both so strange?
Someone comes over to watch movies with you and your roommate. Apparently doing the worm down the hallway and encouraging each other to keep going is “weird.”
9. “Stop reading my mind”
You are constantly thinking of the same things. For example, you are driving to Wal-Mart and get the sudden urge to play your current “jam,” and they were just thinking about playing that same song. It happens all the time. But when it does, you both get pumped because you “just know” each other that well.
10. I know your entire life
The fear of killing each other is over now, and you can actually say you know their whole life. You know when they need a hug without them speaking, you know their parent’s numbers and you know the foods they love and loathe. You even know where they are when they did not tell you where they were going.
11. Distance does not matter
Roommates always come to an end. Either summer arrives or adulthood calls your name. You know that even if they live across the country, you will still spend every Fourth of July and Groundhog’s Day together because your connection with one another is too strong… And why not?
