Every Little Thing is Gonna Be Alright
Graduating from college is a big deal, until it actually comes time to settle and determine what job you want to do for the rest of your life.
As a student, you have been going to school for years and coming out with an expectation to have a job established. Let me tell you, that is not always the case.
While going to college, you grasp a completely different learning experience than you have through your elementary and high school years.
As we grow over time, so do our plans, and our interests begin to expand. Some will have a job lined up as soon as they graduate; others will not, and that is completely OK. Finding a career that will stabilize you for a lifetime will be immediately accomplished by some, but for others it will come with time.
While casually talking to a few close friends, I thought this might be something helpful to write about, seeing as many of us are stressed about not knowing what job will identify us in the future.
A fellow teammate of mine mentioned something about not really knowing for sure what she wanted to do when she graduated, so she kept striving for her master’s in business administration.
Kendra Kehrli has officially, in May, completed her degree when it once seemed so distant back in August.
”My future plans are kind of uncertain at this point,” she says. ”I’m currently training for half a marathon and staying in Ottawa until June 1st for work. Then I will move back to Iowa, on a farm with my family, to look for a full-time job and coach the little girls wrestling club team at Hard Drive MMA. I’m not sure if I’m done competing or not, so I’ll keep up with my wrestling and lifting workouts.”
Talking through this, it made me feel less alone and a little more normal as an individual. Kehrli was not the only one who had plans like this. Many other graduates had similar plans.
Aside from the societal expectations, for us to be successful and have our “life together” by the end of college isn’t always a guarantee.
Life still goes on, and sometimes we get so consumed in our careers we forget about the “first times” we love to experience.
It is expected to have a career and a job to survive, but when was the last time you trained for a marathon, or coached a sport you love to do?
College is a big milestone, but we have many others throughout life.
