When moving to Kansas, many students are not ready for the drastic change from summer to winter. Winters in Kansas not only consist of snow, but also ice and of course, dry-bitter cold. These tips will help you survive a winter like no other.

Winter clothes

Being outside in the wintertime requires extra-warm gear. Having a coat is essential, however getting one that is windproof or waterproof is definitely suggested. Gloves and hats are also a necessity if you will be spending long amounts of time exposed to the wind.

Snow boots

When walking through the snow and ice that later melts into filthy slush, boots that not only keep you warm but protect your feet from getting wet will be important. Wearing two pairs of socks is also helpful.

Heated blankets/mattress pads

If you feel you can’t escape the creeping cold even when inside, snuggling up with a heated blanket or investing in a heated mattress pad will heat up your days; spent less time evading the cold in your own bedroom.

Ice scraper

In Kansas, windshields start to freeze over at the drop of a leaf. Don’t find yourself in the middle of winter and late to work without an ice scraper. In case of an emergency, credit cards work well as an improvised ice scraper. However, many ice scrapers come with a glove attached to keep your hand warm.

Let your faucet drip

In the dead of winter, it sometimes gets cold enough to freeze the water that runs through pipes in houses. If it is super cold out, leave the faucet dripping to ensure the pipes don’t freeze and bust. The slow trickle of water is just enough to melt the ice as it forms.

Lotion

The dryness of Kansas is enough to dry your skin out, especially with the cold. Investing in extra-moisturizing lotion helps to keep your hands from cracking. Try to find an unscented lotion, as the smell can sometimes dry out your skin even more. Lip balm is also an important key in moisturizing. Keep one in your car, coat pocket and by your bed.

Buy bigger clothing

When purchasing winter clothes, consider buying some in bigger sizes to allow layering. Not only is layering a cute way to add flare to your outfit, but it also adds insulation from the stinging cold.
