The OU women's golf team won their first ever tournament in program history at the Spring Invitational hosted by Hannibal LaGrange College (HLG) on April 17-18.
The team is headed up by senior Amy Wolfe, who scored her second victory of the season. Wolfe shot a two day total of 164 with a first round score of 84 and a second round score of 80. Junior Roni Channel finished seventh, sophomore Laura Reed ninth, sophomore Lindsey Lightner 11th and freshman Lindsey Fenton placed 12th.
The women's golf team wrapped up their season with a second place finish on March 23 at the Baker Invitational in Lawrence.
This is only the second season in women's golf in the history of the college and the Lady Braves were very pleased with their overall season.
"Three girls, including myself, returning to the team this year helped a lot. We put in many practice hours. Having two new girls come in this year also helped a great deal to lower our team score," Lightner, an education major from Olathe, said. "My best memory this season is when I shot my all-time low for my college career at the Hannibal-LaGrange tournament in Hannibal, Mo."
The men's golf team wrapped up their season with an eighth place finish at the Baker Invitational.
The team is young but they experienced some individual success on the green. One of the breakout stars was sophomore Zack Kastelic.
"I expect that we should be a lot better next year as a team; we received valuable experience this season. I personally want to be one of the top golfers in the conference," Kastelic, a biology major from Bethany, Mo., said.
Both teams are young and that leads head golf coach Wendell Smith to optimism.
"We learned a lot this season. The more that we continue to play, the more we gain," Smith said. "Next year should be good for the men and women's golf program, if we continue to work hard in the off season. We have new talent coming in next season, although this year we will be losing two amazing seniors Amy Wolfe and Zach Bader."
