Weird news fascinates Kansans

Kansas has its fair share of weird stories.

Some, such as an elderly man who was bombarded with dozens of Moon Pies when exiting a dollar store, never make it on the front page.

Others, like the woman whose rear end became fused to a toilet seat after sitting on it for 2 years, become legend. Even more of a legend was the fact that the woman’s boyfriend had won the state lottery not once, but twice last year.

2009 isn’t even half-over and there are already new stories to add to Kansas’ bizarre catalogue.

In Hutchinson a man was caught naked sneaking into his female neighbor’s apartment. The reason? He was pilfering a pair of her panties. Surprisingly, she wasn’t shocked and had suspected somebody had been raiding her drawers.

In a more heartwarming tale of strangeness, a Kansas couple, Arnita and Lyle Yingling, that was married for 67 years died within hours of each other.  Arnita passed away while sleeping at home, about six hours later Lyle followed.

Freshman Brittany McCullough thinks Ottawa University has weird news waiting to happen.

“When I go to dance class on campus I see a lot of weird personalities,” McCullough said, “I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of weird news slips under the radar.”

On the flipside, Eli Brazil, senior, doesn’t think Kansas is a treasure trove of weirdness.

“The weirdest thing I know of in Kansas is my daughter’s laugh,” Brazil said, “It’s real cute, but kind of sounds like an alien.”

Then there are those who are apathetic either way, like DMarco Wise, junior.

“I’m from Missouri so I can’t really comment on Kansas, but things are weird enough over there.” Wise said.
