Seasonality is a wonderful thing to consider when preparing meals and choosing ingredients to cook with. Spring is well on its way, some days more prevalent than others. Fruit is a great way to introduce the warm weather of spring and it’s a great, fresh way to start, continue and end your day.
There are so many different ways to cook, bake and mix with fruit of all kinds. And with spring fever coming on, you’ll want to be sure that some of your dishes are premade or ready to just throw in a bowl together. This is where fruit is very handy.
Whether you’ve got bananas, pears, apples or mangoes, there’s always some way to fit fruit into your meals.
One of my favorite things to do for breakfast is add fruit to my cereal. Bananas and raisins are a good duo to mix into any morning cereal or late night snack. Another great breakfast treat is pancakes. Just as you finish mixing up pancakes from the box, throw in some blueberries, mashed bananas or chunked apples. The pancakes will get a bit thicker so you may have to add a little more water to the batter and finish mixing.
Fruit salad is a get-together favorite and is a very easy dish to make at home. A fruit salad makes a great breakfast to go or a side to your lunchtime meal. The great thing about a fruit salad is that there are no limits or restrictions. If you like pineapple, add pineapple. Your favorite fruit may be kiwi, so add kiwi. Strawberries, apples, pears, watermelon and grapes are always safe to use in fruit salads because they hold their shape and don’t soften right away. Other fruits, such as bananas and kiwis, may tend to loose their shape but they usually taste just as good.
If you’d really like to keep the presentation of your fruit salad, run to the store and look for some fruit fresh powder. Like lemon juice, it helps keep the fruit but doesn’t have that strong lemon taste.
Finally, who can really enjoy a nice serving of fruit unless it’s in a pie? You don’t even have to stick to the traditional baked cherry or apple pie, either. My favorite spring pie is one that’s full of flavor and it’s great after any meal: strawberry pie.
