The first edition of The Visible Self by Mary Ellen Roach and Joanne B. Eicher provided a new approach at the time to the study of dress, presenting the idea that dress was a larger concept than clothing, a concept to be viewed cross-culturally and objectively. The second edition elaborated on the concept and introduced a discussion of ethnocentrism, ethnic dress, and culture. This new edition, adds discussion of more issues, contains further refinements of concepts, adds new concepts, updates many images and examples to increase understanding, and concludes with a discussion of how dress practice might change in the future.
