Jason Beers will serve as the Student Body President for the 2009-2010 school year after winning the election on April 21 and 22.

Beers bested three other students including Dorvonda Payne, Jake McMillan and Kelly Frazier to see him take the position as one of the top elected students at the college.

Beers will be replacing a departing Eric Cordell who will be finishing his term at the end of the school year.  Cordell said he was honored for the privilege to serve.

“I’m very grateful for the opportunity to be the student body president,” Cordell said.

With Cordell moving on, Beers says he will fill the role by using outgoing personality as one of his major tools.

“I know a lot of the students. I’ll talk about everything and a lot of people know who I am and I’m willing to listen,” Beers said.

Cordell praised Beers’ level-headedness and his willingness to think through situations.

Beers said he understood what students are asking, for him to bring more activities to the school and get more people involved.

The student body president deals with a numerous issues from many people, and the pressures of the job can be high. This is something that Cordell knows about.

“You have to constantly pick your battles, there are ridiculous things asked of you. It’s impossible to please everyone on a diverse campus. Everyone needs and expects something different,” Cordell said.

Beers said he will rely on advice from several people including President Eichner, Provost Tyner, Susan Webb, Richard Menniger and Cordell. There are several issues that Beers will look to push including expanding parking on campus, allowing the siblings of students to stay overnight in the dormitories and possibly the addition of a Red Box on campus.

Beers says he plans to press forward on other people’s thoughts as well by constantly talking with other students.

“I will try to be open to everyone’s ideas and ask how they feel about other people’s ideas,” Beers said.

Sophomore Erica Weaver believes Beers must have connections with the administration, faculty and students.  She also says that Beers can make an impact with diversity.

“He has the opportunity to promote diversity if he has a creative mind and the ability.  His efforts will be appreciated,” Weaver said.
