Spring Break: The Aftermath
Spring Break! Wooooooo! This is the battle cry of college students during the mid-semester week of bliss. Vacations and trips home provide a break in the monotony and grind of the school year. For many students, it is a time to unwind and relax when some prefer to get a little extra work in to earn some extra cash.
Regardless of the path taken, spring break is a time to enjoy and cherish while we are students. Here is the sad fact: it is only a week. After college students make their triumphant return to campus there seems to be a lack of motivation and desire.
With only a month and a half left of school plucky, dedicated students turn lazy and sluggish. It is a tough feeling to avoid. Sophomore Dariusz Aitkenhead said “you think to yourself you only have a month and a half left and then you’re done, so you just try to quickly let the days pass by.”
As finals slowly approach, so does the prospect of going home for good. It is almost impossible to avoid the “post spring break slump.” Work gets shirked off for more enjoyable activities such as playing outside or going for a drive in the nice weather.
To make things dramatic, first year student Matt Bleich said it made him very sad to come back. “I was having so much fun at home and then I had to come back. All I can think about is summer right now,” Bleich said.
It is safe to say that there is no worse feeling than coming back from a nice break from school to find yourself smacked in the middle of a large project or test. Some people do handle it better than others, though. For example, first year student Zach Martin said he was able to refocus very well because he had to take a final on the Wednesday after break due to a shortened class. “I didn’t really have time to think about the loss of free time because of that test,” he said.
Zach is definitely one of the stronger ones coming back from break. For the rest of us, mere mortals, all I can say is keep grinding and finish strong.
