Valentine's Day: is it really that great?
Some people love it and some people hate it. Some people plan for it for weeks while others are completely bitter towards it.
Then, there are people who really could care less about it. What is it? Well of course, it’s the wonderful hallmark holiday known as Valentine’s Day.
I’m one of those people who really could care less about the whole Valentine’s Day deal.
Don’t get me wrong, I used to love it as a child. I always looked forward to making my Valentine’s box to bring to class. I felt like everyone looked forward to it because we all got Valentines and candy and had a great time. No one felt left out.
Now days, I feel a lot of people either expect too much for Valentine’s Day or completely dread it.
When the day starts to get closer, you tend to hear a lot of people talking about how lonely they are and how badly they wish they were in a relationship. Since they’re not in a relationship, Valentine’s Day is going to be absolutely horrible.
But in my opinion, it doesn’t have to be that way. If you think about it, Valentine’s Day is just another day.
If you’re not in a relationship, there are plenty of other things you can do besides being sad all day.
Give out Valentines to your closest friends, spend the evening with them and make new memories. You don’t have to be completely lonely and miserable.
If you are in a relationship, my advice is to not expect too much. I have a boyfriend myself and this will be our second Valentine’s Day together.
However, I’m not expecting him to do anything extravagant for me at all. In fact, I would find it more romantic if he got me flowers and chocolates on a random day rather than just on Valentine’s Day.
Being in a relationship does not mean you should blow all your money on Valentine’s Day either.
We’re broke college students, we shouldn’t be expecting that from our significant others. Instead, spend the evening watching some Netflix and order a pizza. That sounds like perfection to me.
In my opinion, whether in a relationship or not, the whole meaning of Valentine’s Day has been lost. It’s about surrounding yourself with people you care about, whether it’s your family, boyfriend, girlfriend or friends. But shouldn’t that be what everyday is about?
Just remember that it’s a silly hallmark holiday that isn’t worth fretting over. You don’t need to be in a relationship, or a giant teddy bear or a bouquet of flowers to be happy. You do need chocolate though… but you can easily go buy that for yourself.
