When a OU Student skips class
It is not uncommon to walk into a classroom at Ottawa University and notice that at least a few students had decided to skip class that day.
Here, it is easier to find out because of professors taking role. So, what happens when a OU student skips class?
Normally, every class has a lesson and every lesson is followed by a homework assignment.
When that class is missed, so is the homework assignment. This year, professors have been forced to take roll.
Each class’s roll call is then being reported to financial aid to assess if every student is earning his or her college education.
Every class is essential for the mid-term and final; yet, this doesn’t stop students from cutting the class.
So, why do students skip class?
There is never one solid reason for a student to miss class. The obvious reason we think people skip is being ill, which impairs a student’s ability to go to class.
If it isn’t because the student is ill, students skip class to sleep. This is not uncommon on an athletic campus such as Ottawa University. Students have to endure the physical beatings from their sport along with focusing on college courses.
First year Tyler McKendall said he misses classes to sleep. “I’m always tired. I sleep all the time,” McKendall said.
McKendall explained that he has to ask people in the class for notes when he misses classes.
Junior Kasey Crump said he does go to class because he paid for it, “otherwise, I just plain don’t want to go.”
Finally, first year Tabitha Sparks said she skips because she is not prepared for class. “I either didn’t do my homework or forgot my books,” she said.
All the reasons students seem to have to skip class can be easily corrected by being prepared. Students have to juggle school, athletics, and social lives and still attend their basic needs like food and sleep.
It seems that until finals week, students tend to put the last two basic needs first. So maybe this is the year to put the important stuff first and not panic towards the end of the year.
