Have you noticed the change on Snapchat?
Earlier this week, Snapchat updated their software, which eliminated the Best Friends feature…and a lot of people are freaking out. But that is the only element they seemed to notice.
Before this software update, users could see which “friends” they snapped the most, but more important to some users, they could see who everyone else they followed snapped with most.
Many articles have been written about how this new feature is going to “allow cheaters to run wild,” according to E! Online.
Is it that big of a deal for people not to be able to see the top friends of their so-called friends? I mean, I didn’t even think my top friends were accurate—one day I would snap somebody three times, and they would be on my top-friends list.
Something fun and new that Snapchat added with this update that many people are overlooking first, is the ability to add friends with a photo of their “ghostcode.” The yellow ghost on your home page has been turned into a QR code for you to share with people outside of Snapchat so they can add you easily, instead of telling you their username that includes four zs and a silent q.
It’s as simple as pointing your camera (while on Snapchat) at someone else’s ghostcode and they’re magically added to your friends list.
Another fun feature is called Discover. According to niemanlab.org, “Snapchat is currently working with ten media partners, including CNN, ESPN and National Geographic.
These companies will release new edition of Discover content every 24 hours, featuring both videos and articles hand picked by their staffers.
The goal of these media companies, of course, is to hook a new, younger audience that doesn’t often connect with traditional media.”
I personally think the new Discover feature is interesting and useful. I typically get my news on Twitter or other social media sites, but now I am able to swipe to the left and find an article that I can then click on and read, watch or hear more about.
I think it is a wonderful idea to bring news to where people are: social media. Younger crowds can now stumble upon news that they wouldn’t have thought about looking at, until they reached the Discover page.
So instead of dwelling on the fact that you can no longer ‘stalk’ your so-called friends or significant others, let’s take these awesome new features and make use of them.
And if you aren’t amused with that, the CEO of Snapchat, Evan Spiegel, explained on ABC News that “the best friend feature was eliminated because a few ‘higher profile friends wanted to keep their usernames private. “ However, he promised it would eventually be back in a new form.”
So, don’t fret stalkers and untrustworthy girlfriends or boyfriends, you will be able to get back to freaking out that you’re being cheated on sooner than you know it.
