How do you get your news

Legacy media has new competition. More and more people are turning to the Internet to get their news. It’s fast, it’s convenient, and you can get it on your smartphone or tablet.

Instead of collecting the daily paper from the end of the driveway or mailbox or turning to their favorite radio station, people are turning to their computers and smartphones to get the news.

Although many younger news consumers prefer the tech savvy news platforms, many people in the Baby Boomer and Generation X age groups still prefer to read the news from a printed newspaper.

Janae Melvin, Public Relations Manager of Vox Solid Communications, said she is still old school.

“I subscribe to the Kansas City Star and read it each morning and watch morning news on TV, both local and national broadcasts,” Melvin said.

Melvin also said she almost always watches a local and a national evening newscast as well.

“For me, it is essential in the public industry to be informed of all the latest news and how it might impact your clients.”

Newspaper companies have begun using online sites and charging people to see the full article to help collect revenue. Several newspapers also have their own Facebook and Twitter accounts that help keep people up to date on local news.

The local newspaper here in Ottawa, The Ottawa Herald, sends the Herald Headline and community alerts to keep their followers informed about what is going on in the community. Although these services cost, they are free for Ottawa University students.

Editor and publisher of The Ottawa Herald, Jeanny Sharp, shared her views on the news.

“The usage of media has changed dramatically with the Internet because with websites, PCs, and laptops people started to consume more digital media,” Sharp said. “Now we have seen that moving to social media as well as moving to mobile. Mobile is the up and comer, on the way people consume content and other media.”

Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter are a tool reporters are using to get breaking news out. They utilize these more and more every day because it is fast and can reach more people. But, there are still some people that stick to Legacy Media to get their news.

Ottawa University professor, Joanne Gibson-Lucas explained that her favorite source of news is National Public Radio .

“I am a fan of National Public Radio for news and commentaries; I enjoy reading The Economist when I get the chance, but I do not subscribe to it,” Gibson-Lucas said. “Since I do not own a TV, I am dependent on radio and online news sources.”
