Intramural football ends in co-championship
No pads, no helmets, just attachable flags with students playing football. These might seem like it would be laid back and an easy going game; when it can be just as intense as the real games. On week nights throughout the fall, students and faculty members take the field to play the great American game of football.
This is the second year there has been an intramural flag football league. The campus is lit up at nights by the lights at Peoples Bank Field for intramural flag football.
Head softball coach Jay Kahnt is in charge.
"We had six teams sign up to play and we set up a schedule with those," Kahnt said.
When asked about how the boys and girls rules go together he said all rules apply to both males and females the same.
"The only exception is that if it takes four downs to get a first down or touchdown, then a female must be involved directly in the play."
Jason Beers is involved in officiating these football games and has to help explain rules to all the players.
"You start on the forty and play to the end zone, the playing field is forty yards," Beers said.
"You get a set of four downs to get a first down you."
David Birch, senior, was a member of the team "Washed Up."
"Our team lost two games, it would have been cooler if we would have gone undefeated, but overall it was still fun to get saucy out on the football field," Birch said.
Many awards have been given in the flag football league. Best catch goes to coach Kahnt who caught a 40-yard pass in triple coverage. Best defensive player went to Mason McDaniels who returned three interceptions in a game for touchdowns. Best offensive player went to Isaac Johnson, the sportsmanship award goes to "Team Fusion" and the funniest team to watch went to "Freaks N' Sneaks."
The teams that were suppose to play in the championship were "The Coaches" and "Team Make it Happen." The championship game couldn't be played because some of the players were basketball players and the season just started so they were co-champions.
