‘Campus golf’ cures spring boredom
They call it ‘Campus Golf'.
Spring has hit and the clubs are swinging on OU's campus.
To pass time during spring fever, a group of friends has developed ‘Campus Golf', a leisurely game they play to pass the time, senior, Andrew Otto said.
"It's just a fun time with friends," Otto said. "I think Brandon Smith and Kevin Mikeska started it."
Senior, Taylor Leftwich participates in the group outtings on campus as well. He said that there is a competition with the men each time they play.
"The goal is to hit the target with the golf ball in as few strokes as possible, just like regular golf," Leftwich said.
With little to do for free, Leftwich said it's something entertaining to do.
"I think it started out of sheer boredom," Leftwich said.
Participants swing clubs and hit balls around campus - usually on the west side of campus where there is more room and open space.
"We have a fun time doing it," Leftwich said. "We make a lot of memories through it."
Senior, Lori Ewalt said that it's necessary to find something to do while living on campus. In her time, she said she watched ‘Campus Golf,' chased squirrels and played several games of hide-and-seek.
"It's nothing bad," Ewalt said. "We're all out just having a good time, trying to keep busy, not spend money, and stay out of trouble. It builds a unity among the campus."
Despite some obstacles, the boys continue to get together to play when they're bored, Leftwich said.
"Security is OK with it, but you have to watch out for other people and cars if you hit a bad shot," Leftwich said.
Otto said that the guys just get together to play randomly.
"You just gather a bunch of guys and go play," Otto said. "But, it's a good time. There really isn't a point."
