If you ask me: Here we go again, acting on schedules
So the new school year has begun and if you're even half as observant as I am, you know what that means.
It seems that our generation lives life on a schedule. All these years of school have us operating on a 9 months on 3 months off schedule. Therefore, in the summer we attempt to be worry free and carefree and the fall and winter months beg us to buckle down and get work done.
We're young we want to have fun but the truth is that we're all spending roughly $25,000 a year on school. No one can afford to monkey around. I mean…it's a recession. So what can we do? Or actually what can you do; I am above such childish games.
When it gets cool enough for a jacket you grab on to the first person who looks too long. I've seen you. Wandering around all doe eyed over some guy or girl you just met. These instant relationships that murder old fashioned traditions like dating.
These unions revolve around ordered pizza and study sessions. Quick rolls in the hay that lack intimacy because everyone around knows every detail. Really what is wrong with you people? Who lives like this? Nine month relationships that progress at warp speed only to pry yourselves apart for the summer and go crazy. Why don't you just do what and/or who you want whenever you want?
I'll tell you why, because you're programmed. You poor kids are like sheep. All that MTV has locked your brain into constant cycles of over intense relationships and summer flings. This works out well for most of you because all the cartoons you watched as a child made your attention span shorter than a Fruit Roll Up.
Fast forward a few years and there are dozens of new age Olivia Newton Johns and John Travoltas dancing around screeching about Summer Lovin' while searching for winter warmth.
That was possibly the lamest thing I've ever said . But you know what I mean just go with it.
Anyway...ask yourself, I mean really explore what makes you like the person that you've found yourself with. I'm sure that a lot of you are sure that the relationship won't last when you get into it BUT it works for right now.
I'm not saying that this is a terrible practice. I mean, this is college, we've been taught to be efficient. We make gourmet meals from scraps and build relationships out of nothing. When it's cold out its nice to have someone around. You don't have time to go searching and besides Midwest winters have everyone so bundled up how can you be sure if they're hot or not?
If you ask me the whole thing is crazy but it's a necessary evil . We don't have time to cultivate relationships except in summer and then we only have 3 months and we're gone again. College is the only time that we can do these things and not gain a reputation…at least not a lasting one. So summer flings, winter loves, live it up! Just be careful. I don't want my next column to be about free clinics.
