GaGa rallying fans, senators to repeal law
Screw Bieber fever, I'm gugu for GaGa.
I believe she's one of the most innovative artists to date, and she uses her ‘power' for more than just selling her merchandise. Recently, however, she has been harshly criticized for selling politics.
Last week, GaGa was asking her fans, deemed ‘little monsters' after her last album titled "Monster," to rally behind her in support of repealing ‘Don't Ask Don't Tell.' This ban, enacted in 1993, prevents homosexuals to enlist and serve in the United States Army.
On September 16, she posted a seven and a half minute video on her YouTube account that urged senators like John McCain and Mitch McConnell to stop this ban. Because of this, many news organizations have been bashing GaGa, saying she's using her celebrity to try and influence her fans.
I personally think this is ludicrous. Just because she is a celebrity doesn't mean that she can't feel strongly about something and want to have her message heard. She could be urging people to do drugs. She's using her power to be a voice for her generation, just like any other person who wants to make a difference today.
"Since 1993, 1,400 soldiers have been discharged from the army and sent home, regardless of honorable service or how valuable they may have been to their units," GaGa states in her video. "400 soldiers under Obama's leadership alone have been discharged."
How is rallying behind a cause she believes in not a positive thing? I mean, look at Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears - wasn't their influence a negative one for their fans? Please, someone explain, how GaGa's message is so negative to her fans. Last time I checked, she wasn't being arrested for drug possession or violating her probation.
And why is this so controversial? Is it because it's about gay rights or because it's Lady GaGa speaking about them (or both)? No one criticized P. Diddy when he was encouraging people to ‘rock the vote' or Michael J. Fox when he became an activist for Parkinson's disease after he was diagnosed.
GaGa has openly spoken about being bisexual, so isn't she just another person trying to get people to rally behind her?
Her main message, which many viewers are clearly missing, is that ‘Don't Ask Don't Tell' is unconstitutional and not being fairly enforced by the government. Why are soldiers who are enlisting encouraged to hide their sexual orientation if they want to fight for our country? Why does the sexual orientation of our soldiers even matter?
We've spent a lot of time fighting for equality, but we can't wave the flag in victory just yet. GaGa is just trying to get us a little closer to that goal.
"I'm not asking you to agree with or prove the moral implications of homosexuality," she says. "I'm just asking you to do your job to protect the constitution."
I can't help but agree with her when she goes on to talk about no one life being more valuable than another. So, shouldn't someone who wants to fight for our country be able to do so?
She ends this video by calling both senators in her district, but is unable to connect with them due to their voicemail inboxes being full. I think this is something that fans can appreciate (granted they make it to the last 30 seconds of the video) because she's not only telling people to call their senators - she's doing it as well.
I encourage everyone to go and watch this video or at least appreciate that there's someone in the celebrity world today that isn't being locked up or afraid to speak their mind.
