West: Student needs should trump campus appearance

On April 13, 2010

Since the students have arrived back on campus from spring break I have noticed a lot of construction and concrete replacement being done.

The first thought that came to my mind is, where is the University getting this money to pay for every single piece of cracked concrete to be replaced? Does this money come from any of our tuition?

Concrete costs $90-$110 per cubic yard.

Plus, you must take into account the cost of the manual labor, per hour, that the workers have performed.

If you think about it that is a lot of money.

If it is coming out of our tuition then I think that's a little unfair.

It seems as if the school is particularly interested in how the University looks.

And even if the money didn't come from a small piece within the tuition, that is still money that could be thrown into the teaching and education budgets of various departments.

The school could use more advanced technology in the biology department or in any other departments.

The classes in the Science Ward building are using old technology like the VCR. I definitely think it is time for an upgrade.

I am not saying that the University shouldn't care about the cracked concrete or about how the campus looks.

I am saying that I think the students would appreciate it more if they were the University's number one priority.
