Future brings new opportunities
Some people may find it scary to look into the future. While that may be true, it's sometimes necessary.
The future of The Campus newspaper will be much like the present. Having a ‘sexy' layout is one change made this year that will continue next year. We hope the awards will continue from it, too.
The Campus got gold as a paper overall from the Kansas Associated Collegiate Press this year. While this is something we're definitely proud of, next year we'd like to get ‘all Kansas,' which is one step above gold.
But change in the future is also necessary if this is what we'd like to achieve. We would like more of an involvement from higher-ups at the university. We would like more people to comment on issues they feel strongly about.
We would like do to personality profiles on people who are told ‘not to talk to the press.' We think personality profiles would change how the students look at individuals, or make them feel more comfortable that they're on campus and in the position they're in.
We also understand that there are people who won't talk to The Campus because in the past we haven't held ourselves to the highest standard. We'd like the opportunity to improve those relationships.
We'd like to hear what you want, too. We want comments, as we're constantly searching for story ideas. More involvement online with our Web site and polls is something we're striving for in the future as well
But The Campus isn't perfect, either. We'd like to catch our mistakes before the paper hits the press and definitely before they're put on the stands. While this is sometimes hard to do with deadlines and such, it can and will be improved upon.
Accuracy is the most important value in journalism, and if we can't hold ourselves to that then we can't produce a very good college newspaper. We also won't be very good journalists when we go out into the field and get real jobs doing this for money instead of grades.
While the future can't be determined and the stories can't be written, we'd like to say we're ready for the next year and what comes with it-the good and the bad. Because we'll figure it out when the time comes.
