Cunningham: Pay it forward, make a difference
Pay it forward.
You have probably heard the saying, maybe have even seen the movie, but is it something you live?
Not long ago, my family was touched by cancer through my son's 16-month battle with neuroblastoma. Our lives changed instantly. The struggle brought uncertainty. Throughout my son's treatment and recovery, however, there was a constant in our lives. It was the generosity of others.
Though we didn't expect it, and were often surprised by it, people reached out to help.
Whether it was financial assistance, prayers, gifts to comfort my children, or even a simple gesture such as a hug or a caring note, the generosity helped us through the toughest time in our lives. Sometimes the support came from family and friends, other times it came from complete strangers. But, one thing was always the same - it made a difference.
Because of my family's experience, I have been transformed. I decided a mere ‘thank you' wasn't enough.
In fact, I'm confident that a thank you wasn't even expected from those that helped us.
They did it for the simple reason that they wanted to make a difference in our lives. And they did.
I am now inspired to make a difference, too. I do this by paying it forward. I believe that unexpected actions that assist others are the best way to live a fulfilling and meaningful life. Small gestures, large gestures - they can all make a difference.
I use the talents and skills that God granted me and put them to use, not with a paycheck, a thank you or recognition in mind. What I get instead is much more rewarding - a sick child's face lit up with a smile, a hug from someone needing support, or hearing of the money raised from a benefit fundraiser.
Through my actions, I am fulfilled, energized and content. I am making a difference. I am paying it forward.
The results of my actions motivate me to do even more. Seeing others also reaching out their hands to make a difference brings me hope.
As more people are touched by generosity, additional people will be inspired to pay it forward. If everyone did this, what a world it would be!
These are the lessons I teach my children. These are the lessons I hope to teach you. Use your talents, your energy, and your passion to make a difference. Volunteer for a not-for-profit organization. Offer assistance to someone that is facing difficulty. Get involved in your community or school. Write a letter to your elected officials in support of needed legislation. Pay it forward.
Live a life filled not with words alone, fill it with compassion led by needed action. By paying it forward, you will help others, bring fulfillment to your life and inspire others to get involved.
You may increase your knowledge, strengthen your skills, or become a leader. These are characteristics needed in any profession.
They are also qualities that are desperately needed at home and in our communities. If applied by more people, our world would be a better place.
You, too, can make a difference. Inspire action. Inspire hope.
Pay it forward. Live the dream.
