Call of Duty’s popularity prevents teen pregnancy
Many people know about Call of Duty: Black Ops and its crazy popularity.
On launch day the game brought in $350 million and another $650 million in the five days following. Needless to say the game hit its $1 billion mark pretty quickly.
Some may say video games are a waste of time and serve absolutely no purpose. Students of all ages neglect their work to stay up all hours of the night constantly playing.
Relationships are ending because a video game took priority. Children are going without attention because their fathers are transfixed. There are a countless number of things that would be deemed more productive than playing a stupid game for hours and hours at a time.
This is all true and although I do not understand the fascination with Call of Duty in particular I have been known to spend my share of hours in front of Super Mario Galaxy, or Donkey Country Wii. Video games are addictive,
but seem to serve no true purpose besides pure entertainment. Until now.
Lately the rumor floating all over Facebook, twitter, and various gaming blogs is that Black Ops is bringing down the teen pregnancy rate.
I have heard numbers upwards of a 50% decline in the last four months.
Now that number seems high to me in just few months, but I think there is something behind the concept.
For decades now our country has been struggling with teen pregnancy and although the sex talks in high school and inspirational commercials have brought numbers down since the 90's the problem still remains.
Teenagers get bored and then babies happen regardless of the sports the teens were involved in or the clubs in which they participate.
Video games, however, specifically Call of Duty: Black Ops seems to be the captivating factor keeping teens out of the bedroom.
Although studying, practicing, and spending quality time with people you love should be great time occupiers video games seem to work better. Of course both pros and cons come with it.
I think the pros outweigh the cons in this case. I mean, whatever it takes to keep kids on the right path, right?
One thing is for sure. All of this makes me want to play Black Ops to see what is so magnificent about this game that it is capable of keeping teens from thinking about sex.
