Chiefs' impressive start builds fans' hopes
The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Cleveland Browns 23 to 17 on Sunday Oct. 27 in Kansas City to move up to a 8-0 after they finished 2-14 last season.
This great start has allowed KC Chiefs fans in our campus to enjoy a feeling that hasn’t been around too often.
Junior Haydn Neese, a diehard Chiefs fan, said it was the first time he’s seen them start so well and that this is his favorite moment being Chiefs fan.
“They were 10-6 and won their division in 2010, but got destroyed in the playoffs that year, so that’s not that great of a memory,” Neese said.
Senior Jacob Loucks said he wouldn’t define this as the best team he’s personally seen.
“The Derrick Thomas led ones (1990’s), as well as the ‘03 one were pretty solid too,” Loucks said.
In any case, the Cheifs are very different from last year. Junior Christopher Michaelsen believes they are 8-0 because of a better coaching staff, a better quarterback, and “of course, the best defense in the league.”
Michaelsen’s affirmation is not far from reality.
Stats LLC reports that Kansas City’s defense is leading the league in sacks, and linebacker Justin Houston is a big reason why.
Neese, on the other hand, believes they are a better team all around and that they will definitively make it to the playoffs.
However, he is not sure if they will be able to get a playoff win. “We at least have the defense to do it,” Neese said. “And defense wins championships.”
Neese described the Chief’s offense as average.
“They could get more explosive on that side of the ball and make bigger plays then that could help a lot,” Neese said.
Loucks said the Chiefs could definitely improve on offense with a better line play and passing, as well as a better performance by the special teams.
“There have been too many blocked punts, and field goals and plays like that,” Loucks said.
Michaelsen, on the other hand, thinks the Chiefs can make it all the way to the championship and that their most dangerous rival is Payton Manning’s Denver Broncos.
It’s early in the season and there are still a lot of games to be played before the 2014’s Super Bowl in New Jersey, but Chiefs fans are more than welcome to keep dreaming about being cheering for their team that day.
