Who Is Sabrina Ionescu and Why Should You Know Her?
With Sunday, March 8, being “International Women’s Day,” we would like to take a look at a young inspirational woman who is trying to make a difference in the world at the age of 22.
Sabrina Ionescu is a Romanian point guard on the University of Oregon women’s basketball team. If you haven’t heard about her, she is the girl that has been setting some incredible records game after game.
She has recently reached 1,000 assists and she already passed the 2,000-points mark, which makes her the second athlete (male or female) in DI history to accomplish that.
That isn’t all though. Ionescu has recently marked 1,000 rebounds as well. Such achievement makes her the only athlete so far in NCAA DI to triumph such amazing numbers.
Are you impressed yet?
No?
Ionescu is also known as the “GOAT” as she holds the record of most triple-doubles as well. She records 26 triple-doubles making it the most ever done in men or women DI history.
Legends such as the late Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Stephen Curry and others have all acknowledged her and the impact that she continues to have on the game of basketball. They often compliment her on social media and go watch her games.
She has been given many awards and majority of it more than once, such as PAC-12 Player of the Year, PAC-12 Most Valuable Player, ESPNW Player of the Year, All-American, Freshman of the Year, and more.
The point guard is also the first woman ever to play college basketball and have a jersey sold with her number on it – it sold out in a few hours after its first announcement.
She is a role model to many, not only because of what she does on the court, on but also off the court.
Along with being the hard worker that keeps showing after each achievement, she is also one of a kind that really cares for her fans. After every game she could go home and rest, but no. Her day is only done after she gives attention to kids and adults that ask to take a photo or sign an autograph.
Last season as a junior, she planned on graduating early as she was going to be the number 1 pick in the WNBA draft but her time as an Oregon Duck was not over. After losing in the semi-finals of Final Four, Ionescu decided to come back one more season because she had unfinished business.
This was because her extraordinary career was still missing something. She went back for a reason. She wants the national championship title.
One thing that is very admirable of her is the fact that it’s never enough for her. She is always looking for more, she’s always looking to get better. For example, after a game when she got a triple-double, she was looking at what she didn’t do well that needs to work on.
The Romanian point guard has been changing not only the game of basketball with everything that she is doing but also sports in general.
Her level of dominance as the current best college player is something that should not be a generational thing. More athletes need to get inspired by her warrior spirit, passion for the game and how she leads her teammates and is there for them.
As a fan of hers, I have no doubts that this is just the beginning of her fantastic career and that she is going to keep shining big time.
