About three and a half years ago, I came to Ottawa for the first time. For some reason, I fell in love with it and decided I was going to move here. The town was simple: It had all of the necessities and the people were great. I packed everything and moved down here to go to school. I left behind my family, friends and a couple of big things that I took for granted: everything I could possibly want at the tip of my fingers.

Ottawa doesn’t have much. Don’t get me wrong, I still love it, but I do have a few questions. Let’s save those for another article and focus on one big question I have. WHY do we have (need) TWO CBD shops in town? We can’t have an … I don’t know … Chick-Fil-A, Qdoba, Target, mall or any of the other things I left at home? Yeah, Lawrence has them, but that’s beside the point.

What is CBD, you ask? Well, you came to the right place to find the answer. CBD is Cannabidiol. Better known as CBD, it is one of the 104 chemical compounds known as cannabinoids found in the cannabis, or marijuana, plant, Cannabis sativa. NO, it is not recreational or medicinal marijuana; YES it is legal. In 2018, Kansas passed a law that allowed CBD to be sold, and used, legally, as long as it held less than .03% levels of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, a crystalline compound that is the main active ingredient of cannabis). CBD is extracted from a cannabis plant and diluted with a carrier like coconut oil or hemp seed oil. Pretty sure that is all you needed to know, thanks for reading, see you next week ;).

Just kidding. Stick with me here, and I’ll tell you all about it. There are a couple of ways to get your hands on this product. You can order online -- a simple Google search will pull up countless places to order from and ship straight to your door. One website I found, Katsbotanicals.com, gave me the prices and products available. There are gummies, edible oils and vape oils. The gummies retail for $17.99 for a 10-pack of gummies. The oils retail for $34.99-$134.99, depending on what size bottle you get. Finally, the vape oils retail for $30.99-$64.99 depending on what size bottle you get. Unfortunately, for some of you, you do need to be 21 years or older to purchase these products. Sorry freshmen and sophomores, maybe next year.

Now that we know what it’s all about, why would someone need or want to use this product? The benefits include:

4. Can alleviate cancer-related symptoms

5. May reduce acne

6. Could benefit heart health

7. Diabetes prevention

    Of course, almost everything good thing has negatives attached to it. The side effects are:

3. May interfere with other medications

6. Dry mouth

7. Drowsiness

You’re welcome. Now you know all about CBD. Should you use this? It is up to you, I am not here to tell you what to do, just here to give you information. I am basically a walking, talking infomercial.

Last thing, I talked with the OU athletic trainers, Seth Bell and Sindra Schueler, and they confirmed that CBD products will not make you fail a drug test. It is completely legal.
