A bucket list is a collection of experiences or achievements a person would like to accomplish during their lifetime.

Whatever it may be, it is unique to each and every individual. Some of these can be extremely unique, making you squeeze your eyebrows together and say “Wait, what?”

Not many people have an official bucket list, so we asked Ottawa students, “What are some of the things you would like to do or see before you die?”

Below are some of the anonymous responses received:

Eat Bugs

Scientifically it is referred to as Entomophagy and is formally defined as the eating of arthropods other than insects, including arachnids and myriapods. This is considered taboo in many cultures, but it is popular in the regions of, Latin America, African, Asia and Oceania, where it is normal to consume insects like crickets, grasshoppers, ants, beetles, caterpillars, scorpions and tarantulas.

“I was watching television one day and this guy was eating a cricket, and I was curious as to how would it taste and since then I have been waiting for the opportunity to arise,” one OU student said.

Go on a 180-day cruise

Many people have “go on cruise” on their bucket list for a few days or even a whole week. However, there are 180-day cruises, which cost around $35,000. For example, one route stops in five different continents covering 27 different countries. Stopping in places such as Hawaii, Singapore, Australia, Brazil, South Africa and many others is surely a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“My best friends and I have been thinking a lot about traveling the world. We even planned a few different times, but sadly it never worked out. However, I suggested going on a 180-day cruise and they loved the idea. We are planning on going after graduation,” said an OU sophomore.

Sit courtside at an NBA game

It doesn’t matter if it’s an intense playoff game with a lot of rivalry going on, or a regular preseason game. The atmosphere in NBA arenas are always buzzing. Specifically for basketball fans, sitting front row is unforgettable. The chance of being so close to your idols raises goosebumps on one’s skin. Feeling like you are part of the game just because of how close you are, is a memorable experience.

“I’ve been to the Amway Center, American Airlines Arena, Chesapeake Energy Arena and, my favorite, the Staples Center. I was able to sit pretty close to the court at the Amway Center, and it was incredible. I can’t wait to go to many other games and one day sit courtside, it will be one of the best days of my life,” said one student.

Watch the ball drop live in New York City

Christmas is one of the favorite holidays celebrated all around the world. New York City around Christmas time has a stunning combination of decoration and lights, which makes it so beautiful. But the main holiday event happens on New Year’s Eve in Times Square. It is not easy to get a good view of the ball drop tradition live, so people begin to line up the night before.

One student shared her excitement to one day enjoy it in person:

“Christmas is by far my family and I’s favorite holiday. During New Year's Eve, we always watch the ball drop at Times Square on the TV. I just hope that one day my family and I are able to watch it over there.”

Attend all major sporting events

Olympic Games, FIFA World Cup, Tennis Grand Slams, Super Bowl, Tour de France, NBA Finals, MLB World Series and the list goes on. As one avid Ottawa sports enthusiast said, “I would love to be able to attend all major sporting events in my lifetime.”

Take pole dancing classes

“Pole dancing is a taboo way of exercising. Many people look down on it. However, I see the benefits I can gain from it such as: building my core, strengthening my back, toning up, losing weight, flexibility and body confidence. It’s not just for exotic dancers but can be done by any and everyone,” one student said.

Other interesting bucket list items include:

-Fly in a private jet

-Visit all 50 states

-Visit all continents

-View Hammerhead migration (diving)

-Start a vlog

-Own two Alpacas (so that one does not get lonely)

-Get drunk on an airplane

We may not all have a set bucket list, but we all have things we want to do before we die. Remember, you have one life to live, so you should make the best of it!
