Small Tattoos, Big Meanings
A couple years ago, tattoos were a very controversial societal issue, as they were looked down upon or considered taboo. In present day society, it still is, but it’s not as bad as it was in the past.
In a lot of job interviews, one question that has been asked is, “Do you have any tattoos?” Despite this, it hasn’t stopped teenagers and adults from continuing the tattoo movement.
Some people get tattoos because they like the artistic side of it compared to other individuals who get tattoos to remind them of a particular time in their lives, motivation or to pay tribute. And the list goes on.
Some tattoos have more deep meaning than others. A few examples would be having an astrological sign, dedication to a relative or even a sisterhood tattoo. Listed below are a few examples of small tattoos with big meanings found at Ottawa University.
- Rose (Stephanie Rodriguez) – Represents how beautiful and delicate life can be. Every rose has its thorns, which stands for the difficult times we face in life. If we take care of ourselves in body, mind and spirit, that’s when we truly blossom.
- Just Breathe (Nicole Robbins) – A reminder for her to take a step back in certain situations, not worry about every small obstacle that she may face and to just breath. In tennis, it’s also a helpful reminder to stay calm during points and to not get frustrated with how she sometimes plays. Her simple phrase for this tattoo is “take things one step at a time.”
- 182 (Allison Corfield) – She’s a Blink 182 fan, and it shows all her passion for the band.
- Superman Inspired (Cody Hermanson) – Growing up in California, Superman was Hermanson’s childhood hero and someone he emulated. With this in mind, he incorporated the Superman logo along with the Kryptonian symbol that means “hope.” This tattoo reminds him to stay positive and has helped him get through difficult times in his life.
- Coleman (Sydney Coleman) – She fancies her dad’s signature and has it tattooed on her right collarbone. Her signature is almost identical to that of her dad’s. She got it because she loves her name, and it means a lot to her, so she wanted it permanently on her body. “It’s so special to hear people yell my name when I’m running, so it has that connection as well,” Coleman said. “I’m also incredibly close with my dad as we have so much in common and spend a ton of time together.”
- Cross (Ashlynn Good) – Represents her love for God.
- Japanese Symbol (Virgil Reed) – It was a word that he likes a lot from his favorite anime. “Friend commander.”
After speaking to many students about their tattoos and their meanings, most of them indicated they would like to get more in the future. Not all of them love their tattoos though, but at the same time they don’t regret getting them.
Tattoos may not show emotions but they carry a lot for the individuals who have them.
