Cady Blevins, freshman, rides a tricycle on campus during Welcome Week. The University provided many activities during the week to greet students back to campus.

Connecting with teachers, different schedules and meeting new people were all part of the first week of school for many students.

With all of the madness happening around campus, students were given a chance to get acquainted with life as an Ottawa University student.

Whether a returning student or a newcomer, there was an activity for all during Welcome Week 2009, planned by the Student Affairs Office.

"We like to kick off the first week by giving the student body an opportunity to interact with each other and have some fun with different activities each day," Amanda Wadkins, Student Life Assistant, said.

The Fusion Business Expo, organized by Susan Webb, Career Services director, started off the week. Students were allowed to eat free and visit exhibitor's booths to receive handouts. In participating booths, students were able sign up for drawings.

On Tuesday, students experienced a drunk-driving simulator in the Union. That evening in the cafeteria, "Mission Improvable," a comedy show resembling "Who's Line Is It Anyway?" was held.
Wednesday night, students lined up in the rain outside of Daylight Donuts to receive two free donuts during Donut Run.

"We like to include the Ottawa community and show what it has to offer for the students. We have done so by making some of the activities around various places in Ottawa," Wadkins said.

Inflatable obstacle courses and games were blown up in front of the student union Thursday, and students enjoyed goofing off in their spare time.

"I got to kick the football before I went to class," Rusty Thomas, freshman said. "I had a pretty good time."

That evening, the Myers Library sponsored a "Computer Game Fest" where students could play games, enjoy snacks and participate in a door prize contest. Gamers from the Tonganoxie Public Library led the program.

Aug. 28 was "Dairy Queen Night," and students took advantage, kicking off their weekend with five-dollar certificates to the Dairy Queen on 15th and Main Streets. Not all students were pleased with the event though.

"I wish I had known there were two Dairy Queens in Ottawa," Josh Hall, freshman said. "First I went to the wrong one, and then when I got to right one, it was packed. I just decided to go home at that point," Hall said.

OU students received free entrance to the Ottawa Pool in the Ottawa Forest Park Saturday and Sunday. Additionally on Sunday, students were treated to a movie night at the Crystal Plaza Theatre. Movies shown were "The Ugly Truth" and "Aliens in the Attic."
