The different fees and other expenses that students are paying makes saving money seem like a near impossible task.

Students have countless expenses that they have to think about such as books, lab fees, tuition, grocery shopping, entertainment, accessories and a few others.

Paige Pottorff, sophomore business major, has been handling her money more responsibly.

“I recently got a job and have been trying to save more than I spend. I want to be able to afford an apartment next semester and still have some extra money,” Pottorff said.
Sara Humm, sophomore communication major, has been trying to save money for her future.

“I am saving money for graduate school and a place to live while I am in graduate school. I don’t go out very often with my friends to movies and concerts like I used to. Now I go maybe once a month,” Humm said.

Students are not the only ones feeling the negative effects of the economy. Students across the country are also being hit hard as well.

Summer plans are more up in air than usual with a lot of students.

Graduating seniors are having extra trouble finding long-term jobs and underclassmen are struggling to find a simple summer job or paid internship. A lot of companies are even cutting down on the number of unpaid internships offered.

Some students, however, do not see the economy affecting their job search or travel plans.

“The economy has affected me being able to find a job, mainly because I had a job before the economy was getting bad,” Humm said.

There are summer jobs that are easy to find, like in restaurants or summer camps, and a few are still hiring.

Students’ summer travel plans have also been altered thanks to financial woes. With less expandable cash, students aren’t able to travel as much as they did before.

Hunter Dryden, senior recreation and sports administration major, figured out that his summer plans to are going to be altered.

“The economy has affected my summer plans of going home because of the high cost of plane tickets and also the gas prices are raising so that I won’t be able to afford a road trip home to Texas,” Dryden said. “Saving money is very helpful and can assist you when you are in need, also saving your loose change can really add up.
