Clarence Anderson is a fresh face making some big waves in the world of OU athletics.
After earning a number one spot in the KCAC and closing in on breaking school records in the 200M and 400M, Anderson, freshman, will be representing the university at nationals.
"It was my goal at the beginning of the season so I'm happy that I have achieved it," Anderson said.
Anderson has a long history of running track, dating back to when he was eleven, and an urge to follow in the footsteps of a family who used to do the same.
"Track and field has helped me learn how to not give up, and work hard in life," he continued. "It has made me a better person and has taught me self-responsibility. The greatest challenge that has motivated me to be the athlete I am today is having the stress of setting good examples for my younger siblings."
Anderson's coaches are impressed with his performance as well, calling him a humble individual despite his accomplishments.
"He's been great to work with and has a wonderful personality," Assistant Coach Troy Prosser said. "He is an incredible athlete, as everyone should be aware of. He's made improvements this year and we still have goals we're trying to get."
Head Coach Kirk Wren describes Anderson as "an awesome young man."
"I like his smile, attitude and great work ethic," Wren said. "As a person, he's top-notch to me and I'm glad that he is a part of the team. The school record is bitter-sweet; records are meant to be broken. But I will be thrilled when he breaks it and he has a great shot."
Teammates also speak highly of Anderson.
"He's a really good teammate and he always has something positive to say to support the team," Freshman Francesca Carter said.
Senior Justin Garrard agreed.
"Clarence is a tremendous athlete, as well as a great person. He comes to practice every day, ready to work hard," Garrard said. "He's got a long career ahead of him here at Ottawa University and I'm sure by the time he's done here he'll be among the elite runners that have come through this program."
Anderson has been an inspiration to some of his teammates.
"As a teammate, I've learned a lot from Clarence as far as running and charisma," Marlyn Jones, sophomore, said. "He showed me how to use both and he always motivates the team to continue to believe in itself."
Brayonda Powell, junior, knows that Anderson has a bright future ahead of him.
"Clarence, an incoming freshman, has contributed excellent skills to both the football team and the track and field team," Powell said. "I'm pretty sure he will break the records at the end of the season. He's a hard worker in practice and his hard work pays off at the meets. He adds spunk to the team with his upbeat attitude and I enjoy watching him run."
Before each meet, Anderson listens to music and likes to laugh before he runs, which helps him to relax.
As of now, Anderson plans to run track during his time at Ottawa University but not go on to perform at a professional level.
