Last Friday, October 4, Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence hosted the 35th Annual Late Night in the Phog, which included a now-infamous performance by legendary rapper Snoop Dogg.
Since I have two friends that play basketball at KU, I had a VIP ticket to enjoy the event from a very good spot and I did not miss a thing.
The night began with the women’s team hitting the basketball court, or should I say, “hitting the dancefloor” and gave the crowd a dance session. It followed by each member of the team being introduced while quickly demonstrating their own dance moves.
Once the women’s team was introduced to the crowd, women’s head coach Brandon Schneider got the mic and shared his expectations for the season.
The KU women then took part in a three point contest; the winner was one of my Brazilian friends, Mariane De Carvalho.
Moments later, the women’s team played a scrimmage against a few guys, where the women reigned victorious. That was it for the women; they sat down so they could enjoy the rest of the show.
It was then the men’s turn to take the stage and start their dance session. After showing their animated moves, head coach Bill Self took over and made sure that the fans knew that he is very positive about this season.
The Jayhawks were then introduced to the crowd and then they got the night going with a scrimmage.
After introducing both teams, it was time for Snoop Dogg to come out.
While the staff was working fast in order to have the basketball court ready as the stage for the singer, a few poles were added to the court. As they added the poles, I looked at my friend, who was already smiling.
“Snoop Dogg being Snoop Dogg…” I said. “How much do you want to bet that there will also be dancers on this pole?”
He performed his major hits and the crowd was enjoying singing along to every song.
The singer also surprised the crowd by getting a money gun to make it rain on the dancers and athletes.
While some people may be finding Snoop Dogg’s performance extremely controversial, due to the pole-dancers, a money-gun and his word choice (that involved quite a lot of cussing), I personally did not think it was that bad.
I mean, everyone knows what Snoop Dogg is known for…
KU indeed has a lot of fans, and most events that they host are family friendly, but shouldn’t the Late Night in the Phog event be geared toward college students and not children?
