Last Thursday, the Ottawa University teamed up with Mammoth Turf to announce the addition of three new turf fields. These new turf fields include a new baseball field, a softball field and a soccer field.
“We are extremely excited, it’s an exciting experience that the softball team gets to have,” softball player Kylee Weber said. “I can speak for the team to say that this is a blessing since we don’t have field work anymore.”
Mammoth Turf is no outsider to the midwest and the KCAC; the founder, Jake Farrant, was a member of the university’s football from 2001-03. Other members of the company, which include Patrick Ross, director of sales and Brian Ross, vice president, also competed in the KCAC. Mammoth Turf announced their partnership with the KCAC a few months ago in September.
"The partnership with the KCAC is an incredible opportunity for Kansas Turf/Mammoth Sports Construction," Farrant stated at the time of the partnership.
Mammoth Turf is excited to be helping out schools in the KCAC, company officials said.
“I wish we also had a turf outfield as well, but I’m still hyped that we got it,” baseball player Calvin Johnson said.
While not everyone will get to experience these new fields, everyone is excited about it; even the Braves who have retired from their sports before the addition of these fields.
“I’m upset I had to take ground balls off my shins for three years before they got the turf,” former softball player Nicole Pierick said. “I’m jealous.”
These three new fields also entertain the idea of practices not overlapping and everyone on campus being able to work together in harmony.
“Hopefully with the new fields the team won’t be down in the swamp as often,” football player Devin Johnston said. “We won’t have to share the field with soccer anymore.”
The whole campus is excited about the new fields. Chancellor Eichner also teased another big announcement coming next January-February. The new turf fields are set to be finished in time for the baseball and softball 2020 season. They will break ground over winter break.
