Humm: College newspaper is great experience

Growing up I always read the newspaper to keep myself informed, however, I didn’t think I would become involved in telling the news.

Sitting in my high school newspaper class writing my review of the latest Flee the Seen concert or assessing Weezer’s new album Make Believe, I never thought I would be where I am today when it comes to journalism.

In high school I liked going to shows and listening to the latest albums to write reviews for the entertainment section of my school paper. However, I didn’t think I would be an editor for a newspaper at the college level.

I only spent one year on staff at my high school newspaper and didn’t continue because I was told that my writing wasn’t very good, plus there was a video production class at the same time that I just had to take.

After spending a few semesters at OU, I was asked to join the editorial staff of the newspaper because of my design skills. I was skeptical if I could do the job but willing to take on a new challenge.

I have always been interested in news and I have a knack for taking photos so I figured I would be some sort of help to the newspaper.

After two semesters of being the news editor, I have come to realize I like writing and photography more than I thought. And I think I have grown in my skills.

Telling people’s stories and taking the news and putting it on paper is something I now enjoy. I have also won awards for my photos and take pride in seeing them in ink.

Though when I was younger I never would have thought that I could have a career in journalism, that thought has changed.

I have now reconsidered my options for a career and want to continue an education that includes my journalistic abilities.

College has opened many doors for me and I think being a part of The Campus is one of those doors that will remain open.
