OU students have a new job opportunity waiting for them.
COSMC-KC Interview Day starts Feb. 23 and allows students from nine different universities – Ottawa University included – to speak with several potential employers face-to-face in a controlled setting.
The event will take place at the KCI Expo Center in Kansas City, MO.
Susan Webb, director of career services, believes the event holds great promise for graduating seniors.
“Students graduating and looking for positions in sales, management, and information technology should get involved with this because it is an opportunity to obtain immediate employment,” Webb said. “Businesses attend this event with the aspirations of hiring students for entry level positions within their companies.”
Students must sign up for the event online where they submit their background, interests, and resumé.
This information is used to allow students a chance to prioritize which companies they specifically want to be interviewed by and allows companies to rank which students would most likely fit their criteria.
While 27 of the participating companies are interviewing for full-time jobs; actual job positions are only offered to seniors. Juniors and lower level students are welcome to apply for internships.
Some of the companies attending include Target Stores, Social Security Administration, Aflac, Edward Jones and Healthcare Services Group.
Brent Clancy, senior, thinks events like COSMC-KC are positive opportunities.
“Even if you don’t walk away with a job, it allows you to gain experience of the interviewing process.” Clancy said. “An interview can make or break a potential employee, so the more practice the better.”
Laurel Brock, sophomore, may not attend the event, but plans to in the future.
“I’m not graduating in May so there’s not really a career opportunity available for me there.”
Brock said. “I might go to find a summer internship position though.”
Students interested in going to COMSC-KC can either car pool or ride with Webb.
