Worthey finds calling on YouTube

Charley Worthey says he has found his calling from God.

Worthey, sophomore religion major, has been making YouTube videos for a year to inform others about his view on religion and popular issues.

He says he is doing a mission that he feels is what God wants him to do.

“So many people in today’s world are trying to destroy Christianity. ,” Worthey said. “I want to refute those arguments against Christianity. I want to give people faith and hope.”

He tackles controversial topics and gives his Christian perspective on evolution, pornography, premarital sex, the Bible and other issues.

“Evolution is currently my favorite topic to talk about because it is the most interesting to me,” he said.

Junior elementary education major Hannah Chambers likes watching Worthey’s videos because they teach her something.

“I don’t have a good background with religion so when I watch one of his videos it gives me a better understanding of God’s messages,” Chambers said.

Worthey spends time researching topics before making a video about it. He watches other videos, reads books, does internet research and gets advice from Richard Menninger, professor of religion and department chair.

“I give him sources, go over questions and head him in the right direction so he has correct information,” Menninger said.

Even though Worthey does research and has students, professors, people interested in religion and others that watch all of his videos, he says not everyone is welcoming of the information he presents.

“I’ve gotten many negative comments and people bashing me but I just respect them for their opinion and ask them to respect me,” Worthey said.

Menninger said he thinks Worthey presents himself professionally and appropriately in the videos he makes.

“Charley comes across with a loving spirit and has power in his delivery,” Menninger said.

Chambers says Worthey supports his claims with research and logic.

“Charley makes valid arguments,” Chambers said. “My perspective has changed in some ways and the videos have given me more to think about with certain topics.”
